In John 8:21–30, Jesus gives one of the most sobering warnings in the Gospel of John: “Unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” Yet even these hard words reveal the mercy of Christ. Jesus is not exposing the Pharisees because He hates them—He is warning them because He is still calling them to believe.

In John 8:12–20, Jesus makes one of the clearest declarations of His identity in the Gospel of John: “I am the Light of the world.” Spoken in the aftermath of the Feast of Tabernacles, these words would have immediately reminded Israel of the pillar of fire that guided, protected, and revealed the presence of God in the wilderness.

For the past several months, we’ve been walking through the Gospel of John and watching person after person encounter Jesus. Different backgrounds. Different questions. Different responses. But every story eventually comes down to the same question: What will you do with Jesus?

In this Baptism Sunday message, we pause before moving forward in John’s Gospel to look back over the first seven chapters and ask what biblical belief actually looks like. Saving faith is more than agreeing with facts about Jesus. It means seeing Him for who He truly is, trusting Him even when we don’t understand, finding in Him what nothing else can satisfy, and continuing to follow Him when the path becomes difficult.

In John 7:37–52, Jesus stands in the Temple on the final and greatest day of the Feast of Booths and gives one of the most remarkable invitations in all of Scripture: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” After seven days of ceremonies remembering God’s provision in the wilderness, Jesus reveals that everything the feast anticipated is fulfilled in Him.

In John 7:25–36, the people of Jerusalem believe they already know who Jesus is. Confident in their assumptions and traditions, they dismiss the very One standing before them. But Jesus reveals that their greatest problem isn't a lack of information—it's that they don't truly know the Father or recognize the One He has sent.

In John 7:1–24, the public ministry of Jesus reaches another turning point. The crowds are talking about Him, His brothers are giving Him advice, the religious leaders are searching for Him, and Jerusalem is filled with opinions about who He is. But while everyone is talking about Jesus, very few are actually listening to Him.

In John 6:51–71, Jesus reaches one of the most difficult moments in His public ministry. The crowds that once followed Him for miracles and bread now begin to walk away. His teaching has become too hard, His claims too confronting, and following Him too costly.

In John 6:35–51, Jesus makes one of the most important declarations in all of Scripture: “I am the Bread of Life.” The crowd that followed Him across the Sea of Galilee wanted more miracles, more provision, and more bread. But Jesus redirects their attention away from temporary satisfaction and toward the only One who can truly satisfy the soul—Himself.

John 6:22–40 continues the conversation that began after the feeding of the five thousand. The crowds chase Jesus across the Sea of Galilee looking for more bread, but Jesus exposes the true condition of their hearts. They wanted what Jesus could give them, but they did not truly want Jesus Himself.

In John 6:16–21, the disciples find themselves exhausted, afraid, and battling strong winds on the Sea of Galilee. Just hours earlier, they witnessed Jesus miraculously feed thousands with five loaves and two fish. Now, as darkness falls and the waves rise, their faith is tested in an entirely different way.
