A legal expert says there's nothing incriminating in the text messages Jami-Lee Ross released with party secretary Greg Hamilton but there's something for the police to look at in them.

Graeme Edgeler, an electoral finance expert, said the texts seem to show Hamilton's trying hard to do things by the book.

The texts released by Jami-Lee Ross between him and National Party general manager Greg Hamilton.

But he told Mike Hosking the texts do show there was knowledge of the $100,000 donation, so questions still swirl over who that came from.

He said police would probably look a bit deeper especially at possibilities the donation was carefully structured.

"Seven or eight donations were made, did all of those people have a $14,000 donation given to them two days before they sent it to National?"
