En este episodio, vamos a hablar sobre la unidad 2, titulada "The organization of time in the textual world": tense vs time, time-frame, tense-shift y time-frame shift, reasons for time-frame shift, written descriptions and narratives + tenses, and oral discourses + tenses.


ALGUNAS DEFINICIONES CLAVE:


  • Tense: the form a verb adopts to refer to time; they vary from language to language
    • Time: universal concept, independent of language and common to all humankind
      • Time frame: it is a period of time (present, past or future) that a speaker or writer circumscribes to an event depending on when this took place or will take place.

        • Tense-shift: when within the same time frame we use different tenses.
          • Time-frame shift: when we change from one timeframe to another

          • Kuehn introduces two examples:

            • Discourse hopping: where the writer/speaker chooses to shift from one axis to another without signalling their intentions to do so
