DEFINICIONES ÚTILES:

  • LOGICO-SEMANTIC RELATIONS: (meaning relations) They are held in clause complex and across sentences to link semantically clauses in texts with different grammatical and lexical resources. They provide unity and create continuity in texts by linking messages in terms of clarification, addition, time, consequence, and comparison, among others.
  • JUNCTIVES: words or phrases that express logico-semantic relations (also known as linking words). They can link clauses and can be explicit or implicit (coordinators, subordinators, connectors, prepositional clusters, conjuncts or sentence connectors).

  • CLASSIFICATION OF LOGICO-SEMANTIC RELATIONS:

    • Elaboration: restatement, exemplification, clarification and description
    • Extension: addition and alternative
    • Enhancement: time, space, manner, cause, effect, purpose, condition, and concession/contrast

    • STRUCTURAL RELATIONSHIPS:

      • PARATAXIS: when ranking clauses are in a relation of equality (linking)
      • HYPOTAXIS: when ranking clauses are in a relation of inequality (binding)

      • CLAUSE REDUCTION: the process of transforming finite clauses into non-finite or verbless clauses. They are used to compressing information.

DANGLING CONSTRUCTION: when the subject of the reduced clause is different from the subject of the main clause, but it is not explicitly stated.
