Gratitude for Neighborliness

Listen Later

Charity = Neighborliness

Matthew 22:37 – 40 says: “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

1 Peter 4:8 adds new insight to the above scripture: “And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves:  for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”

It doesn’t say that charity will cover a multitude of sins, it says the multitude of sins (half of which are about loving your neighbor and the other half which are about loving God.

I practiced this principle of neighborliness as it relates to charity the past couple of days.  The result:  I feel more free.  It’s easier to give and receive.  I don’t feel the urgency to use all of everything up.  I love giving before I realize I have too much.  Connection has grown with one neighbor in particular.  I have enough, they have enough, all of God’s abundance gets used.

Receiving in gratitude is part of being neighborly.  It took her several tries to get her to say she would receive from my abundance,  I was trying to be neighborly, but she wouldn’t let me.  She was not being neighborly to me. She was basically forcing me to guess if she really didn’t want what I was offering, or if she was struggling with a limiting belief.  It could have caused an uncomfortable moment, and shut down my willingness to give if I were not as easy going as I am now.

You can’t out-give God.  He will always be the most neighborly.  We can be neighborly to him by receiving what He has given us and just saying, “thank you, yes, I receive that!”!

This giving was all motivated by love because my neighbors don’t NEED anything.  Unlike society has indoctrinated us to believe, charity is not about giving to the needy.  If we only give to the needy, it is a judgment thing.  We look around for someone to be neighborly to. Instead, just be neighborly without judgement!

Just like everything else the Law of Attraction affects, we receive in the way we give.  Do you only want to receive when you are needy?  Do you want to force yourself into a needy position just so you can ask for a blessing?

This is one step above being moved by compassion…to receive when I don’t need!  We wish we had excess but feel uncomfortable about receiving when we don’t need it. Weird!

Decide based on you, not on them.  I saw a guy holding a sign in a median on the highway once, and I gave him a banana. Not because he needed it, but because I didn’t need it.  I gave $10 to a shopping cart lady once, not because she needed it, but because I was impressed to give it to her.

There is no other reason but that it is neighborly (charitable).  And there is no compulsion or obligation. If we give in that way, there is no charity or neighborlines
