I am grateful for lessons of experience. And even more valuable is the wisdom that I have gained from the reproof of a mentor or even my husband when I have made choices that have created stress in our marriage.
A big factor in how we are shaped and the choices we make as children is how we are corrected or reproved. Reproof takes all forms as parents do their best with what they know.
Michael on our call today shared that in his experience, our Savior and our Father in Heaven, reprove with a gentle nudge to help us back on the path, and encouragement to do better. We have indeed read stories of Jesus when he did just that with the woman taken in adultery and others.
Reproof is a way to help us be in better alignment. In order for us to receive inspiration from God, we have to be on the same wavelength. When we come to the Lord with questions and requests, we need to first qualify ourselves to receive the answer. We do this by seeking daily to be more in alignment with God’s truth, the pure truths that all of us are subject to, and the truth that each of us in our individual purpose and mission that is only known to God, are subject to.
We prove ourselves by our actions, then we have the wonderful opportunity for reproof for mentors, God’s loving guidance, and others whom we trust as having our best interest at heart. After the reproof, we have another opportunity to prove ourselves with the wisdom gained. To be free to try, then receive correction, then try again is a gift that too often we neglect, or worse, rebel against.
And finally – focusing on eternity and the larger goal, helps more easily make course corrections. It seems impossible on the shorter scale, but in God’s perspective, anything is possible.
