What is serenity? The ability to right your ship, to calm your inner self, to be at peace and emotionally balanced?
A story came to mind of a rancher who wanted to hire someone to help on his farm and with the animals. As the applicants came, one by one, the rancher asked one questions: “Why should I hire you?”
One young man’s answer stood out as most interesting, “I can sleep when the wind blows.” The rancher didn’t understand the answer, but the applicant was hired. One night, hurricane force winds awoke the rancher from a sound sleep. He immediately ran to the bunkhouse to wake his new hired hand to help him make sure the animals and crops were secure.
He found the young man snoring loudly, apparently not phased by the howling wind.
The rancher angrily shook the young man and yelled at him to get up, get dressed and help him go check on the animals and crops. The young man only answered, “I can sleep when the wind blows.” And then he rolled over and went back to sleep.
The rancher ran out to do what he could alone. As he sent from place to place around the ranch, he found all the animals secure and the barn doors shut tight. All that could be done to help protect the crops had been done by the new ranch hand earlier that day.
The rancher finally understood what it meant to be able to sleep when the wind blows.
We all know that turbulent waters wash over us occasionally. Serenity is a feeling of peace and calm that comes when we have done all we can do.
Acting immediately on inspiration, produces a confidence and trust in God, the universe and myself that I will know and will react on the spontaneous action that must be done in a split second decision. That is serenity.
Serenity seems to be a very low energy state of being. However, if you have ever known someone with serenity, you will agree that serenity stands out! There is no blending in when you exude serenity. You are different. Everyone wants to be in your space. Serenity gets noticed!
Serenity is a choice. It is the power of breath. Create a moment of clarity and just breathe. When you breathe in serenity, everything else disappears.
Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” -John 14:27
