Great Big Story: The Beginning

Listen Later

Verses Used:

  • Genesis 1-3
  • Job 38:4-7
  • Isaiah 14:12-14
  • Revelation 12:7-9
  • Genesis 1:1-9; 26-28
  • Genesis 3:1-4; 6-11
  • Luke 10:18

Takeaways:

  • The Bible is the true story of the world. He is the main character in the story, but you and I are also characters in his story.
  • God wants to redeem and reframe your individual story. God can give you a better story to live into.

Scene 1: Origins

  • God will not allow sin to remain in his presence: He is holy.
  • Understanding the origin to God’s story sets the stage for why sin exists, why the world is the way it is, how to have a relationship with God, and why we need help.
  •  Stories don’t make much sense without origins.

Scene 2: Creation

  • God made the world perfect. His original design, his intent was for people to live in perfect relationship with him.
  • Adam and Eve always did what was good, right, and perfect (Holy) so they could be in God’s literal presence. God’s desire for Adam and Eve was for relationship.
  • God’s desire for you and me is the same as it was for the first humans. God has not changed.
  • What is important to understand is that God’s intention for humanity was to be with them. For humans to enjoy God and his creation. To be blessed and multiply.

Scene 3: Fall

  • God asked questions, not because he didn’t know the answers, but for Adam and Eve to admit that they had sinned. Adam and Eve bore the responsibility for their actions.
  • Often people wonder why the world is the way it is. Because of the fall, sin has plagued our world.
  • Because God will not allow sin to remain in his presence, he removed Adam and Eve from the garden.
  • We were made to live in close relationship with God for eternity. In Ecclesiastes, it says that God has put eternity in the heart of man.

God’s story tells us that we were made in God’s image, for relationship, and with purpose.

When we remember that our story begins with God, we recover true identity and belonging.

Discussion Questions:

  • What words come to mind when you imagine life in God’s original design?
  • What does Genesis 1-2 reveal about God’s character and His desire for us?
  • What did Adam and Eve want that the serpent offered to them?
  • What kinds of temptations are we face with?
