Great Caesar first caught the critical eye for releasing a concept video for “Don’t Ask Me Why” which centered on the modern fight for gender and sexual equality. The buzz around the video’s socially conscious message earned the Western-influenced indie folk band cred from varied celebrity endorsements and sent them on a whirlwind tour through SXSW along with some speaking gigs. The sextet settled down shortly afterward to focus on writing and recording their foot-stomping singalongs. The result is a project with soulful, sweet vocals over retro keyboard tones, lush floating guitars, and trumpet fanfare. Groovy, rumbling bass and efficient, ticking percussion structures their pop-forward folk.
