We wrap up Season 5 of the GrogCast with some discussions of games that just couldn’t scratch that gaming itch, games that need graphics overhauls, and the oldest dice in our collections, along with the required “what did you play this week?”
What games come up?  Ambush, Alea Jacta Est, Tiller’s Squad Battles and Panzer Battles, D&D;, Old School Tactical II, Civilization (both the train-wreck that was Civ IV and the glorious righteousness that is Civ 5), GMT’s P∞ program, and console/computer RPGs like Skyrim, Divinity, HALO, and The Division.  We also riff for a bit on Peter Jackson’s LOTR/Hobbit movies, as well as Maltese Falcon and Day of the Jackal.  How do we tie all of that together?  When you figure it out, let us know.

We’re wrapping up season 6 with another travel back through our wargaming past.  This time we’ve got Craig/Jarhead and Gary/Ardwulf joining to talk about the medieval and Renaissance time periods, and drifting back to the end of Rome and the start of the dark ages.
We talk about all sorts of games, ranging from the Total War and Crusader Kings series on digits, to the Great Battles of History on the tabletop, and include tips of the cap to Warrior Knights, King Arthur, Pike & Shot, Robin Hood, The Ancient World (GMT), and Cataphract, among plenty of others.
That’s a wrap on Season 6, and while we’ll bring you plenty of coverage from Origins over the Summer, we’ll fire up Season 7 of The GrogCast in the Fall!

GrogCast Season 6 Episode 14 – Walking Backwards Thru History, part 4

So for the past, well…  forever, we’ve had a forum-based Kriegspiel for the battle of Jena-Auerstedt being run in our forums.  The battle is now over and the AARs are trickling out to our site.  But we wanted to bring in some of the participants to talk about the actual conduct of the game, including how they joined the fray, what they thought of the format, and what they learned from wargaming in an information-constricted environment.
The cast of characters includes Jim O as The Kriegmeister, Dr S as the French delegate, Vance as the Prussian Taskmaster, and Chris as The Guy Who Showed Up Late.

GrogCast Season 6 Episode 12 – Jim Werbaneth Interview

GrogHeads’ own Airborne Rifles (Joel) and Gunner98 (Bart) discuss their new novel, and the Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations scenarios that inspired it, including their alternate-history timeline that starts to diverge back in 1989, and leads to the shooting war that broke out back in 1994.
Bart tells us all about the scenarios he’s already built, and the ones that are coming soon (WW3 in the Caribbean?), as well as the Northern Fury ones that inspired Joel’s original forum AARs.  Joel talks about the AARs as a starting point, and building a story around them.
When are we going to start seeing the novel(s)?  They’ll tell you all about it when you listen!

Cyrano jumps in to join Brant and interview Brad Warren, designer of the forthcoming game Arms & Ambition, a multiplayer age-of-gunpowder battle royale with a combination of strategic maneuver and political wrangling.  Brad describes the genesis of the game, some of the unique mechanics, the lessons he’s learned along the way, and the next steps he’s taking towards bringing it to market.
