It's Group Therapy Thursday Day!
Dear Ted and Amy,
I need your advice. My 78 year old dad is still driving and while he hasn’t been in any major collisions or anything, let’s just say his car has had more than a few close encounters – with curbs, mailboxes, a few scrapes from those who unfortunately park near him. My family has gently suggested that it’s time for him to give up driving. But even the mention of it sends him into a rage. He says that he’s fine and that giving up his keys will never happen. For some reason, he finds it hard to believe that we’re worried about his safety and truthfully the safety of others rather than just trying to cut down on his freedom. We love him and we want to do what’s best but convincing a stubborn dad that he should no longer get behind the wheel has been a really tough situation for all of us. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
