It's Group Therapy Thursday time!
Dear Ted and Amy,
Our two kids are in their twenties and still live with us. Our youngest is a full time college student and doesn’t pay rent. It has always been our rule that you don’t have to pay rent while you’re going to school. Our oldest has been living at home rent-free too, but my husband and I have recently decided it’s time for her to start contributing financially. She works part time and is taking a few online classes, but she’s upset with us, because she doesn’t think it’s fair that she has to now pay rent where her brother is not. I understand her frustration but I feel like there’s a difference between being a full time student like her brother and what she’s currently doing. She insists that we’re going back on our word and she can’t afford to pay rent in the position that she’s in now. My husband and I are arguing about this because I would have them home forever. I don’t want to push her out before she’s ready. But he says we don’t want to set the expectation that she can live with us indefinitely without contributing. Any suggestions?
