Group Therapy Thursday

It's Group Therapy Thursday!

Dear Ted and Amy,
My wife and I both grew up in CNY and some of our family is still here. But a lot of them have moved to other places in the country, including my parents. Whenever they visit, they assume that we will be the ones picking them up from the airport because we live pretty close. This is not just when they’re specifically coming to see us, but are visiting other family members too which means we have to drive them there. It’s usually not a big deal. One of us has to get up early or leave work, but we do it because it’s family. But here is what is really irritating us. Every time WE fly out to see one of those family members, none of them ever has time to come get us from the airport. Maybe they do live a bit farther from the airport we’re flying into and sometimes the cities are bigger than getting around Syracuse. But even if we ask beforehand, they never seem to give us a clear response as to whether they can or not. We’ve ended up having to take an Uber or one time we actually had to rent a car to get there and that costs a lot of money! My wife says we're not offering to pick up anyone anymore since they never reciprocate. Are we wrong for assuming that the shoe should be on the other foot when we visit, or because it’s not as convenient for them, they shouldn’t have to make an effort?
Signed,
