It's Group Therapy Thursday!
Dear Ted and Amy,
I’m having an argument with one of my besties and I’m wondering who the listeners think is in the right here. She had a baby about six months ago and admittedly, she’s really the only one of our friends who now has kids. Her husband works a lot so she normally has the baby - and I give her credit that it’s not keeping her home. We had a ladies night about a month ago at a friend’s house and she brought the baby. It was a little weird – as we’re all drinking wine and cussing in front of a small child – but we were glad she was there. But now it’s turning into every time we do something that is “adult only”, she brings the kid. We just got invited to this fancy holiday dinner at a friend’s house where we’re getting all dressed up and it’s being catered, and she told me that she is bringing the baby. I mean, isn’t that what babysitters are for? I will say financially it would not be a problem for her to pay for a sitter. It’s not like he’s a constant disruption but it just is a different vibe when there is a baby around. I told her it was not appropriate and offered to help her find childcare. Now she is all upset that I am not supportive and she says she is not going. My parents had NO problem getting someone to watch us. They never took us to any of these adult gatherings and I’m fine. Isn’t it good to not be constantly around your child? Don’t you think she deserves to have a night out to be away from that responsibility for awhile?
