It's Group Therapy Thursday time!

Dear Ted and Amy,
I’ll be spending this Valentine’s Day alone because my fiancée cheated on me and we broke up last year. Stupidly we got a puppy when we moved in together and so when she moved out, we agreed to split “custody” of our dog who we both love very much. It’s not so much that I don’t think she’ll take care of our dog while she has him but it kills me having to see her every time we have to share him. Even if she picks him up at doggy daycare, or at the house when I’m gone, it’s still a connection. This dog could live (hopefully) another twelve or plus years and this means another twelve years of being connected to my ex. The thought of not having that dog in my life destroys me, but so does the idea of being tied to her. I know she won’t give him up. Is it a thing to sue for custody or how should I handle this without getting a lawyer involved?
