Ted & Amy On Demand

Group Therapy Thursday

Listen Later

It's time for Group Therapy Thursday!

Dear Ted and Amy,
I’ve been dating a guy for about a year and I really like him. He’s got a great job, his own place and he seems to be really good with money. He makes smart decisions. I, on the other hand, do not. I work a full time job and a part time job and I’m still struggling. I have a decent amount of debt which reflects in my credit score. I feel like I hide it well. I still have some credit cards that work. Here’s the thing – I’m not planning to ask him for help. I’m handling my own mess. But I also feel like when you’re dating someone, you’re trying to figure out if there is a future there and I’m starting to feel like it may be fair for him to know what my situation is sooner rather than later. If my financial report would make him hesitate long term, doesn’t he deserve to know now instead of investing more time in me? We haven’t really had serious talks about the future yet. But he’s casually talked about how I might be “the one”. I don’t want to lose him. But what if this is a deal breaker and he breaks my heart down the line because of my past mistakes? Should I risk scaring him away or should he be willing to accept me as I am, debt and all?
Signed,
Just Above Water in Wampsville
