The Evolution of Spirituality in Healthcare

During my time at Boston University as an aspiring occupational therapist, discussing spirituality with patients was strictly discouraged. This was many years ago and it was a long-standing belief that such matters were better left untouched to maintain a neutral environment for patients from diverse backgrounds. It also took into account those who did not practice spirituality and/or religion, and those who had trauma surrounding these aspects of life. While this is important, and should be considered, it seems that is true for any topic, modality, tool or treatment. That is what patient centered care is all about.

A remarkable shift has taken place in recent years. More healthcare professionals are engaging in conversations about religion and spirituality with their patients. At first, this departure from tradition unsettled me, as I was conditioned to avoid these topics. But with time, I've come to appreciate the broader perspective that spirituality brings to patient care.

Redefining Spirituality in Health

Spirituality in healthcare goes beyond religious beliefs. It encompasses practices that contribute to mental and emotional well-being. Meditation, mindfulness, and prayer are integral components that have gained recognition for their positive impact on overall health. Incorporating these practices into healthcare discussions acknowledges the interconnectedness of physical and emotional well-being.
