Lesson Text:
11About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. 1Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And this we will do if God permits.
After Connecting with God through Christ and becoming a part of God’s family, all believers are EXPECTED to Grow in their knowledge and understanding of God. (5:11-12a)
Our growth is stunted when we decide to stop LISTENING to God.
Not wanting to be held ACCOUNTABLE for what’s been learned.
Growing in the KNOWLEDGE of God is ESSENTIAL for spiritual growth. (5:12b-13)
2as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
Spiritual growth occurs PROGRESSIVELY, not INSTANTLY.
Spiritual maturity can be defined as UNDERSTANDING God’s word and CONSISTENTLY applying it to life.
7Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;
5In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. 10So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away.
