May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the US. In this episode, we uncover the differences and similarities between various Asian cultures and discuss what being Asian means to us. #riceislife 

In the spirit of Halloween, we're talking about superstitions we grew up with from our cultures, from the evil eye to lucky number 8, and lots more. While they are often bizarre and irrational, superstitions can actually help unify a group of people and help identify a culture. Whether you’re a little stitious or superstitious, ultimately, whatever you choose to believe in is up to you.

We talk about obscure remedies that our parents brought over from their homeland, health products we can’t live without, and how we were influenced by the traditional medicine our parents passed down to us. 

Immigrants of European backgrounds can sometimes be neglected in immigrant stories, despite having grown up culturally different from white Canadians who have lived here for generations. Today, we’re telling their stories and sharing their experiences on what it’s like to be an invisible immigrant.

We reflect on our experiences with identity and belonging as immigrants to Canada, and discuss what being Canadian means to us. There are aspects we are proud of and aspects we are not proud of. And that's okay. In fact, it's that duality that allows us to be critical of the injustices of our country while also wanting it to be better for future generations, whether for Indigenous people, new immigrants and all Canadians. On this Canada Day, we wish you a day of reflection, learning and belonging. 

Our dads are obviously a huge part of our growing up immigrant experience. We discuss things like the extent of their frugality and how they all had the same desire for us to excel at math. But jokes aside, we also reflect on all that they've done for us and continue to do now. Dads, we love you and happy father’s day!
