Massah and Meribah stand to this day as a lesson on what not to do. If you want to stay in God's good books, don't pull a Massah and Meribah. Thus, we know that the place has become notorious as a location of disaster. But tonight I want to examine with you what exactly happened at Massah and Meribah. Thankfully, unlike the great unsolved mysteries of the past — who killed JFK? Why did Dag Hammarskjold's plane go down in Rhodesia? — we have enough information here in Exodus 17 to form some solid conclusions. We will see that there was a quarrel and there was a test, which is of course why the double name Test and Quarrel. We will see that we too like to quarrel with God over the same issues that brought Israel out swinging against Him. And we will see that if we try to test God, He may even be humble enough to submit Himself to our test. Finally, we will see that when we think we are testing God, He is really testing us.
