Article Title: High-powered ‘drone freezing ray’ gets airport trial

URL: http://metro.co.uk/http://wp.me/p2Vnvc-oPEm

Synopsis
The US government’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is trying to find tech that can detect small, unmanned aerial vehicles that are flying around airports, because of their potential use by terrorists and smugglers. Now they’re trialling the Anti-UAV Defence System (Auds), which was developed by three British companies – Enterprise Control Systems, Blighter Surveillance Systems, and Chess Dynamics.First a thermal imaging camera will allow the Auds operator to target a specific drone. Then, once the drone has been located, a high-powered radio signal is activated. This jams the drone’s signals, making them unresponsive. In a statement released last year Graham Beall, managing director of Chess Dynamics, said: ‘Countering drones is now a global issue and an increasing concern for the military, government and homeland security forces across every continent.‘It’s expected that unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) will be used increasingly for malicious purposes as they can carry cameras, weapons, toxic chemicals and explosives and are being used increasingly for terrorism, espionage and smuggling purposes.’The FAA has not yet announced which airports will trial the ray.
