Decent Self-Help Book by Master P

As a New Orleans native, I was familiar with Master P while I was growing up. "Guaranteed Success" is actually a pretty decent self-help book, and not the sort of thing you would expect from a hardcore gangster rapper (for people who listened to Master P's early rap with the No Limit label). It's written in plain language and is easily understandable. There are a number of writing exercises for the reader to complete in each chapter.

Throughout the book, Miller encourages you to visualize the future you wish to have for yourself as vividly as possible, and to formulate a concrete plan for achieving your goals, working at them each day. He tries to empower the reader with the message that you can improve any area of your life that you choose, you just need to gain knowledge about what to do, and apply conscious, persistent effort. Miller grew up in poverty in the Calliope projects of New Orleans, so his rise to success really is quite inspiring, and it's tough to be cynical about the advice he's advocating.

Miller gives plenty of examples from his own life to support his ideas. You come across funny little chestnuts of wisdom in the book, such as "You have to stand for something so that you won't fall for anything," and "Most people don't plan to fail, they just fail to plan." He also advises you not to automatically equate money and material wealth with happiness and success, because those things are not as necessarily connected as many people would think.

Good for Teens and young adults

Guaranteed Success is a good book for a young adult. Somewhat of a workbook. It really gives you a semi close up view of what it takes to achieve your goals in life. For those interested in using Hip Hop to reach and teach youth and young adults I also suggest checking out "Live Above The Hype: A Hip Hop Life Skills Curriculum." It includes 20 insightful lessons that initiate in depth self reflection in at risk youth and young adults, with a powerful foreword written by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson! Peace Percy Miller. Well done!

Make 'em Say UHHHH

Hands down- this was one of the best books I've read.

Like many youths at the time, I was heavily influenced by hip-hop music and culture of the late 90's. Through this book, Master P has mastered the way to inspire generation hip hop (no pun intended).

The book succeeds as the content is focused more on aiding the reader in his or her quest to success than simply a biography of P's life. Although Master P has shaken his former Ice Cream Man image, he has an extremely motivating rags to riches story and uses this personal journey as a backdrop to encourage and help the reader find his or her own path.

The kicker is that in this book you write just as much as you read. Yes, you actually WRITE in the book.
