Guesstimates - Example 1 - Estimate the Daily Google Drive Users Globally - Interview Question

Listen Later

Clarifying Questions:

1. What is Google Drive? → A cloud-based file storage and collaboration tool by Google.

2. User type? → Both personal and enterprise users.

3. Geography? → Global users.

4. Time frame? → Daily active users.

Estimation Approach:

1. Start with the global population:

~7.5 billion people worldwide.

2. Eliminate restricted regions:

Google services are banned or limited in countries like China and parts of Russia. Remove ~1.5 billion from the total → ~6 billion potential users.

3. Age filtering:

Focus on those aged 15–60 (likely to use digital services) = ~60% of 6 billion → ~3.6 billion.

4. Internet penetration adjustment:

Global internet penetration ≈ 60%. So, 60% of 3.6 billion → ~2.2 billion internet-connected potential users.

5. Competition consideration:

Alternatives like Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud exist. Estimate Google Drive’s market share at ~70% →

70% of 2.2 billion = ~1.5 billion total users.

6. Daily Active Users (DAUs) conversion:

Typically, only a fraction of total users are active daily. Assume ~20–30% DAU/MAU ratio:

25% of 1.5 billion = ~375 million daily users.

Final Estimate:

~375 million daily users of Google Drive globally.

Gut Check:

Given Google’s massive reach across Android, Gmail, Google Workspace, and educational platforms, it is reasonable to estimate that roughly 1 in 4 internet-connected individuals uses Google Drive daily, either personally or professionally.
