Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS): A Rare Neurological Disorder

Listen Later

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. This condition leads to nerve damage, causing a range of symptoms. GBS can be triggered by viral or bacterial infections, and in some cases, it may be associated with coronavirus. The disease typically begins with tingling and pain in the feet or hands, followed by symptoms such as weakness, difficulty walking, and fatigue. Symptoms can progress rapidly, potentially leading to paralysis and affecting the respiratory muscles, posing a life-threatening risk. GBS can occur at any age and affects both genders equally. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100,000 people annually. GBS is neither contagious nor hereditary.
