If only I had taken that class, or waited a little longer, or remembered to do that thing…we all experience guilt, regret and remorse throughout our lives. In a previous episode, Jamie and Guy discussed shame - which comes from a place of “I am bad”. In today’s episode they continued this discussion focusing more on guilt which is “I did something bad” and how to keep that guilt from becoming shame. Guilt isn't always bad - sometimes can be a motivator and a teacher. If we didn’t study for a test and received a bad grade - the next time we may feel more motivated to prepare better. But only operating out of guilt - or feeling bad if we don’t do something - isn’t healthy and can lead to feelings of frustration and resentment. Likewise, we will have regret and remorse in life - but that doesn’t make our life bad. Jamie emphasizes the importance of understanding these feelings are normal. What’s important is to recognize them, move through them, repair when you can and don’t let them eat you up.
