Sturdy Western Melodrama
Many years ago I read "Death of a Gunfighter" by Lewis Patten and enjoyed it. I don't remember if I ever read another Patten western, but I liked his style of writing and his prose. "Guns of Vengeance" was a good, entertaining oater if you like westerns. Patten brings things to a boil early in this fracas between a big ranch--Ramrod--and the farms around it over water rights. The leathery protagonist makes a credible hero, and he has as much to worry about from the two dastards that turn an entire community against him as he has to deal with in his own family. Walt is facing ruin because his neighbor has gotten more than his share of water and Walt's ranch stands to suffer because he cannot grow enough hay to feed his herd. Everywhere he turns, he finds himself facing ruin unless he can re-route the water. Moreover, he has to contend with a sarcastic father confined to a wheelchair who derides Walt's best efforts to handle the situation. "Guns of Vengeance" is a rewarding western. My only complaint is the ending which never ties up the bittersweet romance between Walt's father Jake and Jake's old love interest.
Unusual tale of vengeance
Walt's father cannot stop riding him and comparing him to his deceased older brother. Yet Walt is a good son, works hard, does everything right that he knows to do. When his neighbor diverts the water that Walt depends on, aided and abetted by the people who should be arbitrators, Walt is puzzled and angry. Solving this problem is the prinipal plot but running in the background are Walt's doubts about his wife. Did she marry him because she loved his brother and his brother died? Did she stay with him out of duty? Could he trust her? There's a set-up, betrayal, lynch mob, burned out ranch, and most of the rest of the standard plot features. But it is worth your weekend.
