A soft-spoken, guitar-playing drifter named Cain Vestal arrives in Dodge City, en route to Arizona. After consulting with Doc Adams, Cain learns he has only a few months to live due to a severe heart condition. He entertains patrons at the Long Branch Saloon with a heartfelt rendition of "Beautiful Dreamer," endearing himself to the townsfolk.

However, upon spotting Joel Adams, a wealthy and arrogant land baron, Cain's demeaner shifts dramatically.
