When we speak about India and its relationship with the world, we often focus on what we have received from the world. But what about what we have given to it? This doesn’t get covered as much. Even when it does, we go to the extremes. Either we were a vishwaguru or our only contribution is ‘zero’.

Is there a more nuanced view? That’s what we explore in this episode. What have we given to the world? From the stories of our mythology that have parallels in Persian and Greek myths, the versions of Ramayana and Mahabharata in Indonesia, Malaysia and Cambodia, the spread of Buddhism from India to the world, and the trade between West Asia and Africa and west coast Indian states. In Spotlight, we feature Renu Saluja - a trailblazer who in a short but illustrious career edited the finest Hindi films of the 80s and 90s. She gave life to films that have since gained cult status. We discuss her craft, her films and friends and her impact on the many women editors who followed on her footsteps.

Aimless conversation is therapy. It is good for the soul. We drifted a lot in this episode. Because we had Swanand Kirkire as our guest. With Swanand we wandered all over the cultural landscape of India – the bylanes of Indore and its usal-poha, the ragas of Kumar Gandharv, the social commentary of Dada Kondke films, the multi-faceted genius of B.V. Karanth or the forgotten lyricism of Kamlesh Pandey. Swanand’s genius stems from his deep immersion in our popular culture and it shone through in this 2-hour long conversation. What also came across was his honesty, his conscious engagement with the world around him and his love for cinema as a medium of expression. Swanand wears his fame and his accomplishments lightly (he’s, after all, a 3-time national award winner) and he almost turned into a co-host of this podcast giving us a masterclass on pop culture. We listened, rivetted.

Swanand was simply the best debut guest we could ask for.

We begin this episode paying our tribute to S.P. Balasubrahmanyam – among the greatest singing voices of India ever. While we were limited by our knowledge of his vast repertoire in Tamizh, Telugu and Kannada, we hope we have done justice to his great talent. SPB was trained singer whose strong foundation in classical music gave him wings to soar high in world of film music. His singing was imbued with emotions and a certain innocence that touched the hearts of millions of listeners both south and north of Vindhyas. He will live in his songs forever.

इस बार के पॉडकास्ट में बात ब्यूरोक्रेसी/नौकरशाही पर, जो हमारी देश की लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था का एक जरूरी आधार स्तंभ है। आजाद भारत ने पिछले 73 साल में ब्यूरोक्रेसी के अच्छे और बुरे दोनों चेहरे देखे हैं और जहां एक ओर इस यात्रा में कई बड़ी योजनाओं के सफल क्रियान्वयन के लिए ब्यूरोक्रेसी की व्यवस्था ने महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है वहीं दूसरी तरफ बहुत कुछ है, जो ठीक नहीं है और सत्ता के विशेषाधिकारों के दुरुपयोग के साथ भ्रष्टाचार और शोषण के उदाहरण भी कम नहीं  हैं

कोरोना काल ज़ारी है, और इस हफ़्ते दूसरा एपिसोड लेकर हम हाज़िर हैं जिसमे इस बार की बात-चीत का विषय है मजदूरों का पलायन, हमारे देश में कोरोना काल की सबसे मार्मिक घटनाओं में से एक, और बड़े स्तर हुआ पे ये पलायन हमें विभाजन के समय हुए बड़े पलायन की याद दिलाता है..
