There are times the prophet speaks to the people on behalf of the Lord, and there are times the prophet speaks to the Lord on behalf of the people. Habakkuk is the latter. In the face of wicked and oppressive leaders seeming to prosper, he asks, “How long...?” And when he realizes that God is going to use a more wicked nation to bring about justice, he asks, “How could you...?” We’ve all had those “How long?” and “How could you?” moments. Both lament and praise are profound acts of faith in times of disorientation and disappointment.
