India Arie sang so passionately, "I Am Not My Hair" and I belted out every word right along with her with full belief, authority, agency and autonomy. My hair certainly cannot holistically define me but it has been one of my many ways of expressing my creativity, beauty, positivity and strength as well as my trauma, pain, hurts and burdens. I am not my hair, but my hair is an expression of who I am.
