Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba pick up the pieces after Melissa’s destruction

Listen Later

Hurricane Melissa leaves a trail of destruction across the northern Caribbean, with Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba bearing the brunt. Black River in Jamaica and Petit-Goâve in Haiti are among the hardest hit, with up to ninety percent of roofs destroyed and many lives lost. In Cuba, while no deaths were reported due to advance evacuations, the town of El Cobre in Santiago de Cuba saw many homes destroyed, including the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity. As relief efforts begin, communities face a long recovery ahead, with power and telecommunications lines down and more storms potentially on the way.
