This afternoon (3/3/22), in our slightly-longer-than-usual Rambam Bekius chavurah, we concluded our side-topic investigation of the Rambam's shitah on the status of halachos derived from the hermeneutical principles. Led by Halbertal, we read through the Ramban's objections (which we were originally going to do inside, but skipped due to lack of time) and then read Halbertal's take on the Rambam's approach. Suffice it to say, it gave us what to think about! In truth, one could only do this sugya justice by going through the many cases in Shas that would seem to undermine the Rambam's approach. But since this is Rambam Bekius, we felt that this was a sufficient level of depth. Next week we'll return to Hilchos Talmud Torah Chapter 6 (בג"ה).
מקורות:
רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות ממרים א:ג
Moshe Halbertal, "Maimonides: Life and Thought"
This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Sarah, in memory of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks zt"l, who changed many lives with his Torah and sterling middot.
Bekius Disclaimer:
Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. Each session consists of us reading through the Rambam's writings together without much preparation on my part, and without going into depth by consulting commentaries or primary sources. For all these reasons, there are bound to be inaccuracies, errors, and other types of shortcomings which would not be acceptable in a prepared shiur, but are quite typical of a bekius chavurah. Please bear this in mind, and know what you're signing up for when you listen!
