Listen Later

Part 2 of the Lord's Prayer Series

How do we protect God’s name?  What does God expect us to do?  First, we control our

actions.  We are obedient to God when we listen, and we act according to the way Jesus taught: “We hallow God’s name by living in a way that reflects God’s goodness, majesty, beauty, and love” (Hamilton, 18).  When we praise God, we hallow God’s name.  All of creation is meant to praise God, and therefore hallow God’s name.  How well are humans doing in their part?

And the second way we protect God’s name is by not throwing around God’s name

whenever we feel like it.  We do not say that we are doing something in God’s name when God would not support it.  We don’t expect God to support each one of our own earthly causes, as we pray for our baseball team to win or for our bracket to do well.  Our commandment tells us, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain” à Do not use the Lord your God’s name as if it were of no significance.  “God’s name is not to be used as a rubber stamp for our causes” (Lord Teach Us, 48).

There are times where we will be right, and there are times where we will be wrong, in this world.  Hopefully we will be right more than we are wrong, but in our nature, we are human.  We will be rejected, and we will be challenged in our faith because of that, but this is the truth that we must hold on to: God will restore our soul.  Whether we were right or wrong, God will forgive us and move us forward.  So stay close to Jesus.  We do not live for people in this world.  We live for God.  The once blind man saw that when he spoke in favor of Jesus.  Samuel saw that when he trusted God over his fear of Saul finding out what he was doing and killing him.  The Psalmist saw that when he saw God’s presence and hope even in his darkest valley.  Do what you can control.  Live for God.  Live for God’s name.  And may all honor and glory always be given to God.  Thanks be to God!  Amen.
