 Our producer Doc has never been trick or treating. Which really surprised us - and prompted a listener named Molly to ask, "but why not?" The answer had nothing to do with costumes or candy, and everything to do with race. Doc is Black. Raised in an all-white neighborhood, his parents and grandparents wanted only to protect the kids from the realities - and very real risks - of racism. Halloween was just one of many sacrifices and adjustments Doc learned to make. In this episode, we have, or at least try to have, The Conversation. The one about race. The hard, uncomfortable talk that feels like a highwire walk over a field of landmines...
