The storyteller explains the pain of his parent's divorce, which occurred right after he was born, and of later on living on the streets as a teenager. Hamlet's memories of his uncle and other kind adults at family gatherings sustained him in his darkest childhood moments. He tells us that his work as an adult is, in part, a result of the pain of his childhood but, more importantly, an attempt to acknowledge all of his students and be a posItive adult role model for them.
