Hamnet: When Grief Becomes Art - Review

Listen Later

This week on The Overshare Pamphlet, I’m diving back into movie reviews with a deep, emotional look at Hamnet, the critically acclaimed new film directed by Chloé Zhao. With awards season officially underway, this film has been getting a lot of buzz — especially for Jesse Buckley’s incredible lead performance, which completely floored me.

In the episode, I talk about how Hamnet reimagines the origins of Shakespeare’s Hamlet through grief, parenthood, and marriage, focusing on Agnes Hathaway and William Shakespeare as they navigate the loss of their son. What stayed with me most wasn’t the plot, but the emotional tone — the way the film captures loss so honestly and makes you feel it, even if you’ve never experienced something like it yourself.

I also touch on Zhao’s stunning pastoral direction, the film’s themes of love, resentment, and healing, and why this might be one of my favorite performances of the year. To wrap things up, I share my Songs of the Week — three tracks I’ve had on repeat and can’t stop thinking about.
