It's usually the first question that gets asked on a first tee, before anybody has even hit a shot. Most newer golfers freeze a little when it comes up. The word does a lot of quiet work in a round, and a lot of people use it without ever stopping to think about where it came from or what it actually measures.

It now governs handicaps for golfers in well over a hundred countries.
