The Windows 11 Out of Box Experience (OOBE) is part of Windows 11 Setup, and it's the first thing you will see when you purchase a new Windows 11-based PC and turn it on for the first time. The Windows 11 OOBE is similar to that from Windows 10, but it has been visually refreshed to match the Windows 11 look and feel. And it has been updated several times since the initial release of Windows 11. What you see here will vary a bit from PC to PC, but here's a quick rundown of the most common interfaces.

Windows 11 will cross two important milestones in October: Windows 11 version 22H2 will exit support and Windows 11 version 24H2–released in limited and unfinished form only with new Snapdragon X-based Copilot+ PCs in June–will be distributed more broadly to the entire user base, including the vast majority on traditional x64-based PCs. This week, Paul shows off some of the new features in this latest Windows feature update.

Now we have another choice when it comes to de-enshittifying Windows 11 in situ, if you will, or after you're already up and running. This one is not a typical app, however. It's a command-line script, written with PowerShell, that works with both Windows 10 and 11. And while I understand some are nervous about command lines, and even more nervous about scripts that need to be run with admin privileges so they can change your PC's configuration–both completely understandable–you should at least examine this thing. It's incredibly useful.

Windows 11 provides a Phone Link app you can use to access key iPhone and Android phone features from your PC. These can include, among other things, interacting with notifications, making and receiving text messages, making and receiving phone calls, controlling media playback on the phone, viewing, sharing, and saving phone-based photos, and more.
