He seemed like a good neighbor—helpful, handy, trusted by the elderly. But Kevin Gavin was a serial killer who preyed on the vulnerable women in his own apartment building.
Between 2015 and 2021, Gavin, 71, gained the trust of elderly women by helping with repairs, then brutally murdered them in their homes. He stabbed Myrtle McKinney, 82, in the neck; stomped Jacolia James, 83, to death; and strangled Juanita Caballero, 78, with a phone cord. He was caught on video using Caballero's debit card after her murder. Gavin pleaded guilty and received 30 years to life. The prosecutor called him a "serial killer inside his own apartment building"—a chilling betrayal of the trust he was supposed to serve.
