This week in our Hang In There! series on the Ten Commandments, we turn to a command that is short in words but deep in meaning: “You shall not murder.” Far from being merely a prohibition against taking a life, the Fifth Commandment invites us into God’s heart for the protection, valuing, and flourishing of every person He has created.
Martin Luther summarized this command by teaching that we fear and love God not only by avoiding harming our neighbour, but by actively helping and supporting them in every physical need. In other words, God calls His people not just to avoid violence, but to become agents of life, compassion, and care.
