One of the most significant periods in the history of Israel began with a story of hope. The book of 1 Samuel begins with the story of a certain man named Elkanah, who had two wives: “One was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none” (1 Samuel 1:1–2 NIV).
This story has provided hope for women who found themselves waiting to conceive a child. But the story is also about waiting for God’s perfect timing to receive his perfect gifts.
