In an attempt to combat theft at its stores, Loblaw is testing receipt scanners at four of its locations. Customers who go through self-checkout must use the device to scan their receipt’s barcode — confirming that they paid something — which opens a metal gate, letting them leave. Theft is getting so bad, maybe we should just let them have this stuff. A Toronto police officer suggested that residents leave their car keys by the front door to avoid a home invasion, seemingly to let criminals steal their vehicle if they break in, leave and avoid injuries. The Toronto Police Service issued a statement Wednesday confirming that an officer made the remarks at a recent community meeting.
