Guantanamo Bay detention camp was established in January 2002 by President George W. Bush to hold terrorism suspects and "illegal enemy combatants" during the so-called war on terror following the September 11 attacks . The first prisoners arrived at the temporary facility called "Camp X-Ray" on January 11, 2002.The choice of Guantanamo was deliberate and cynical.
