On hard copy tonight, we look at The Rate of Unemployment in a country as populous as Nigeria which has been a constant source of anxiety for many of its citizens. The Minister of Labour and Employment said Nigeria’s unemployment figures were to reach 33.5% this year from an already alarming high of 23.1% in 2019… But this figure, worrisomely high as it is, was projected for normal times. The COVID-19 Pandemic which has hit the economies of many countries very hard, Nigeria’s inclusive, seems to have brought the problem into bigger prominence, as many sectors which are massive employers of labour such as tourism, sports and entertainment, have taken a colossal hit!
As if this was not problem enough, for many who have jobs, working conditions are most times, less than ideal, a situation which has led to many incessant strikes especially in Nigeria’s public sector…
Most recently, the health sector.
It’s days now since the national association of resident doctors embarked on a strike, over complaints of welfare and inadequate protective equipment, among others.
For many, this is perhaps the worst time for medical professionals to embark on a strike but looking at their demands, some have concluded that they may just have a point, especially since about 800 health workers have been infected with covid19.
Our guest tonight is the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo, A Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
