Hard-Fought Forgiveness | Jason Holdridge

Listen Later

This powerful message takes us into the heart of what it means to truly forgive, using David's stunning act of kindness toward Mephibosheth as our guide.

In 2 Samuel 9, we witness something revolutionary: instead of eliminating potential rivals from Saul's household as any ancient king would do, David asks, 'Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness?'

This wasn't just forgiveness—it was actively seeking opportunities to bless those who had every reason to be his enemies.

The message challenges us to move beyond surface-level forgiveness into what's called the 'forgive, forgive, bless, bless' model: forgiving the person, asking God to forgive our own sinful responses to their hurt, asking God to bless them, and finally being willing to bless them ourselves.

This atypical response mirrors the forgiveness lineage we see from Jesus to Stephen to Paul to Timothy—each one releasing their spirit to God while refusing to hold offenses against their persecutors.

We're confronted with the reality that unforgiveness acts like a damaged nerve ending, constantly reminding us of its presence, stealing our peace and joy.

The freedom we desperately seek comes not from coping mechanisms or avoidance, but from tearing up the IOUs we've collected in our hearts and releasing people from what they owe us.

When we hold grudges, we think we're maintaining control, but we're actually being controlled. The radical invitation is to pre-decide to pre-forgive, to wake up each morning asking who we can show God's kindness to, even among those who've hurt us most.
