In which we follow Stephen as he takes leave of his old life in Coketown, meeting with the steadfast Rachael and a curious old widow, whilst encountering the unexpected visit of a lady from a different sphere, bringing a rare moment of poignant social exchange amidst their harsh surroundings. We witness his quiet resolve to seek a fresh start beyond the desolate town, carrying with him hopes and small kindnesses, as he steps into the unknown with a heart still full of honour and affection.
