Dan Preston calls it the number one sales hack in the world: get your face on camera. In this Hardscape Mentor podcast episode, Dan and Luke Parmeter break down why trust is what closes a $10,000 or $20,000 hardscape sale, and why showing your process, your crew, and your personality on video builds that trust before a homeowner ever picks up the phone. Dan explains how the Hometown Hardscapes videos made him the go-to contractor in a town of 20,000 people, and tells the story of a client in Knoxville, Tennessee who watched his YouTube videos in a home theater for over a year before calling a contractor from Wisconsin instead of anyone local.
Luke lays out a practical video plan for contractors at any stage: start with casual phone clips, stories, or a lunchtime live in the Hardscape Mentor Facebook group, then work up to hiring a professional videographer to follow a project from the before shots through a sunrise or sunset finished tour. He also covers why every YouTube video should include your market location so it shows up in local searches, and why landscapers moving into hardscaping should only promote the work they actually want to do.
The episode then heads to a jobsite at Dan's project with longtime Hardscape Mentor member Ben Taylor of Taylor Made Landworks. Ben walks through how he qualifies leads by sending every caller to his website and quote request form, using a QR code on his designs, and asking about budget and project type before stepping foot on a property. He and Dan talk honestly about the weekends lost to chasing tire kickers in the early years, how aggressive qualifying finally gave them their Saturdays back in year four, and why setting boundaries with leads protects your time, your family, and your business from burnout.

Dan is back in Chicago at Aquascape's Pondemonium, this time with Dan Cordoba, a contractor who has made a name for himself in one of the biggest hardscape markets in the country by refusing to compete on speed. Greg at SEK Surebond was the one who told Dan he had to meet him.
The conversation gets specific fast. Cordoba talks about the little moves that separate a portfolio: mixed materials, multiple borders, inlays — and when a client won't allow contrast, simply rotating the same paver 45 degrees to designate a fire pit area from the rest of the patio. He walks through a built-in grill where he ran Unilock Mattoni as a basket weave accent instead of a standard vertical soldier course, four vertical, four horizontal. His crew pushed back at first. Then people started noticing, and the price comparison went away.

Dan sits down with Weston Zimmerman, founder of SynkedUP, at Aquascape's
Pondemonium event in Chicago. Both of them came up the same way — field guys
and former foremen — and that shared background is exactly why this
conversation lands differently than most software talk. Weston spent 15 years
at Tulsey Landscaping, and it was Pondemonium itself, 18 years ago, that first
pushed him toward personal growth and toward being "more than just a ditch
digger."

Luke Parmeter and Dan Preston open this one with the question hardscapers keep asking: what actually takes a company to the next level? Dan's answer is networking — and not the vague kind. He breaks down where it starts (social media DMs), where it goes (industry events, local contractors, even your subcontractors and your so-called competition at the coffee shop), and how one nugget from a monthly mastermind can save a contractor time, energy and money the very next week. He points to Mastermind #48 as the proof: a pool coping question that started as an install discussion and turned into "is this a job you even want to take?", plus BJ from Outdoor Network Services challenging everyone to go search their own market in ChatGPT and see whether they show up.
Then we sit down with Martha Hill — a Hardscape Mentor member since day one, who stayed up until midnight to sign up the night the group opened. Martha walks through a career that started with a forestry major she picked because of some park rangers she met on a family vacation, and a switch to landscape architecture at Mississippi State chosen partly to dodge chemistry, calculus and physics. She co-oped with the Brickman Group in Chicago and Philadelphia, worked for a landscape architect in Jackson, then got talked into applying for a teaching job she'd never considered — and spent the next 31 years as faculty and department chair of Landscape Management Technology at Hinds Community College, building the program off ALCA's model curriculum and taking students to what's now the National Collegiate Landscape Competition every single year.

Most hardscapers lose jobs before they ever send the bid. Not because their price was too high. Because they talked themselves out of it first.
Why You Need to Be on These Monthly Mastermind Calls: This conversation didn't happen in a course. It wasn't scripted. It was built in real time by members who are running businesses right now, working through the exact same problems you are, and sharing what's actually working on the ground. You can't get this from a YouTube video. The back-and-forth, the honest admissions, the moment someone says something that shifts how you think about your own business — that only happens live. Monthly Mastermind is where the library gets made. Show up for the call, and you're part of building it. Miss it, and you're watching it after the fact.

Dan sits down with Chuck, co-founder of Down to Earth Landscaping (DTE), at their headquarters outside Denver, Colorado, to break down what branding really means for a hardscape and landscape construction company — and why it's so much more than a logo.
Chuck walks through DTE's rebrand right before Covid, when they dropped their maintenance division, went all in on landscape construction, and built logo assets for everything they do. But the visual piece is the small part: the real brand is the client experience — responding within 24 hours, discovery calls, clean branded trucks and equipment, restrooms on site, no cigarettes on the job, and a smooth handoff from Chuck's design/sales side to Jeff and the ops team, with clients able to reach one or both owners daily.

They call it maintenance-free… but that’s not the whole story. Pavers are a low-maintenance solution, not a zero-maintenance one. In this conversation, we break down the real-world effects of sun exposure, pollen, stains, polymer sand wear, ants, moss, and site conditions - and how smart contractors turn those realities into opportunity. From routine cleaning and sealing to full hardscape restoration, this episode explores how to protect your reputation, extend the life of every patio, and create a powerful recurring revenue stream in the process.

A sit-down conversation with the Nunez family — Joel, AB, and their father Odi — who built Nunez Outdoor Living in Michigan from a small landscaping operation into a full design-build company specializing in synthetic turf, retaining walls, patios, water features, and lighting. Joel and his crew came down to collaborate on the synthetic turf inlay portion of an ongoing project, and Dan brought them off the job long enough to talk about how the company grew, what changed when the next generation came in, and why putting the work you want to build into your portfolio is the move that pulls clients toward you.
