Extreme domestic violence

I just finished reading this book for the second time. I read this book many years ago and was shocked and horrified at man's inhumanity to women. This was before I worked in a psychiatric emergency room. In that job I learned that DV is rarely a one-sided dynamic and it frequently escalates to physical harm due to the parties using alcohol and drugs - methamphetamine in particular. In California over the past 5+ years when the police are called in they have shown a dismaying tendency to side with the woman no matter what the evidence shows or the involved parties report. You might say "well it's only fair, the law has favored males for the past 5000 years so it's time for a little payback." At least you might say this until it happens to a young man you love and care about. When someone you KNOW is perfectly incapable of hitting a woman, (except possibly as self defense in severe provocation), gets hauled away to jail and has to spend $10,000 to pay a lawyer to set the record straight, you may find yourself feeling righteous outrage about the whole situation.

My point is that domestic violence is one of those impossibly complex issues and it doesn't have easy answers. Concerned people need to get a lot more creative about their interventions if they are truly concerned about justice.

Strong Entry for Inspector Wexford

Inspector Wexford forges ahead, this time into three ambiguous reaches of the criminal landscape, of which two are particularly nasty and particularly ambiguous. This complex novel interweaves three stories -- the abduction and then return of two young women, the return of a convicted pedophile to his home after he has served his time, and the case of an abused wife that finally ends in murder. All of this, of course, is interlaced with developments in Wexford's own life, in this case mostly having to do with his relationship with his daughter Sylvia. I won't go into detail, to avoid playing the spoiler, but two of the stories raise really difficult questions about right and wrong. How many detective writers make you think, while simultaneously amusing you and producing a bang up mystery? My only regret about Ruth Rendell is that I don't have more of her books still left to read.

It did, however, contain a large number of silly errors, (spelling, word usage and punctuation) not the fault of the author but of the team that converted the original to the e-book. Try to get it right in future as these are the sorts of errors that detract from our enjoyment. You need to provide some mechanism which allows for instant correction or questions by your readers. As well, page numbers would certainly help to identify where an error can be found and corrected.

It would certainly help for someone who knows Standard English as well as dialogue, to read the e-book before you begin distributing it.

Another masterpiece by Ruth Rendell.

I have been reading Ruth Rendell since I was in high school, 30 years ago. I thought when I read "Judgement in Stone" then that mystery writing could not get any better than that. How wrong I was.
