Listen Later

Embark on a compelling journey in this episode of the Yale College Voices podcast, where the host, Darice Corey, engages in a dynamic conversation with two extraordinary guests, Julia Bakes and Brian Robinson. Together, they unravel the diverse threads of culture that not only enrich the Yale College experience and New Haven community, but also foster unity and inclusivity during challenging times.

First in the spotlight is Julia Bakes, an administrator for the Richard U. Light Fellowship. Julia shares insights into the fellowship's mission of providing funding for students interested in intensive language study in East Asia. Her narrative unveils tales of resilience during the pandemic, illustrating how language and cultural exchange can be powerful tools for connection and understanding. Julia, an independent writer with a memoir set for release in 2025, adds a literary dimension to the cultural mosaic.

The conversation seamlessly transitions to Brian Robinson, marking his twentieth season as the Manager for the Yale Symphony Orchestra, a club that holds six concerts each academic year, both on and off campus. These concerts are live streamed worldwide, with a live audience at Woolsey Hall. Brian's journey unfolds through his classical training, diverse compositions, and operatic performances. As a baritone section leader at local churches, Brian's musical tale spans genres, from the whimsical wind quintet, Cretaceous Quintet, to the rock-infused Tet Offensive.

As the podcast unfolds, Darice explores the intersection of Julia and Brian's worlds, delving into their collaborative efforts in the poetry realm. The conversation takes a poignant turn as they discuss how poetry, especially during the pandemic, becomes a powerful force for bringing people together. Julia, a founding member of Never-Ending Books, Volume Two, and Brian, the host of an Open Mic Surgery, reflect on the synergy between language, music, and poetry.

Never-Ending Books, Volume Two is a collective of artists and book lovers who run a free bookstore for the New Haven community. Open Mic Surgery is an open mic poetry reading that takes place on select Tuesday evenings at the collective. They share how these creative expressions enhance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) by providing a platform for diverse voices and fostering a sense of community during challenging times. Brian recently published a collection of poems celebrating the one-year anniversary of Open Mic Surgery.
