Harriet Chalmers Adams was an American explorer, writer, and photographer for National Geographic. Nicknamed “Mrs. Marco Polo of the Americas” & “world’s greatest woman explorer,” she was the only female journalist allowed on the French frontlines of WWI. She was a co-founder & first president of the Society of Women Geographers.
Gertrude Ederle was the first woman to successfully swim across the English Channel. An Olympic swimming champion, Gertrude trained at the Women’s Swimming Association & set multiple swimming records throughout her lifetime. After her victorious English Channel swim, she pursued a career in vaudeville, acting, & swim instruction until her death at 98 years old.
